Mjet flies to Chicago since the start of summer
2011.

The nickname ‘Windy City’ actually has non-
meteorological origins. It was coined by
newspaper reporters in the late 1800s in
reaction to the oft-blustery boastfulness of
Chicago’s politicians. Nevertheless, Chicago is
windy, with everything from cool, God-sent lake
breezes at the height of summer to skirt-raising
gusts in the spring, to spine-chilling, nose-
chiseling blasts of icy air in the winter. The city
experiences all four seasons, with late spring
and early fall being generally warm, clear and
dry times.

When the sun begins to shine again and warmth
creeps through the skyscrapers, from April
through October, everyone flings open their
doors and makes a greedy dash for the outdoor
festivals, ballparks, beaches and beer gardens.

Chicago’s third-tallest skyscraper (at 1127ft) is
our favorite place to get high. In many ways the
view here surpasses the one at Willis Tower, as
the Hancock is closer to the lake and a little
further north. Plus, you have a couple of options
for taking in the view – one of which saves
money and provides liquid refreshment.

Rising up boldly from Grant Park’s northwest
corner (between Monroe and Randolph Sts),
Millennium Park is a treasure trove of free and
arty sights. Frank Gehry’s 120ft-high swooping
silver band shell anchors what is, in essence, an
outdoor modern design gallery. It includes
Jaume Plensa’s 50ft-high Crown Fountain, which
projects video images of locals spitting out water
gargoyle-style; the Gehry-designed BP Bridge
that spans Columbus Dr and offers great skyline
views; and the McCormick-Tribune Ice Rink,
which fills with skaters in winter (and al fresco
diners in summer). But the thing that has
become the park’s biggest draw is ‘theBean’ –
officially titled Cloud Gate – Anish Kapoor’s
ridiculously smooth, 110-ton, silver-drop
sculpture.

The city likes to claim that the Magnificent Mile,
or ‘Mag Mile’ as it’s widely known, is one of the
top five shopping streets in the world. It’s a bit
of a boast, because most of the retailers here
are just high-end department stores and
national chains that are available throughout the
country. Granted, the Mag Mile versions are
more slicked up than usual, and their vacuum-
packed proximity on Michigan Ave between the
Chicago River and Oak St is handy.

Transport to/from Chicago
Mjet operates to/from Terminal 5.

There are a number of ways to get to and from
O'Hare International Airport. Located just 17
miles northwest of downtown Chicago, O'Hare
International Airport is accessible via local mass
transit lines, regional trains and buses,
downtown and suburban shuttles and interstate
highways. Most ground transportation access
areas are located at the main entrance for each
terminal.
